What you need to know about sizes and lengths of various commonly used steel elements

Whether calculating the material required to fabricate doors, windows or the number of reinforcement required when casting concrete, or planning transport logistics. it always helps to counter check the sizes typical steel sections come in.

The following are the most common sections and pieces in the market and the sizes they come in.

1. Sheets (8ft by 4ft or 2.4m by 1.2m)
Sheets that come in this size include:
-Black sheet (mild steel sheets)
-Expanded mesh sheets
-Perforated sheets
-Welded mesh

2. 6m sections
Most hollow section tubes come in this size. Including but not limited to, 2 by 1s, 3 by 3s, 4 by 4s etc.
-T sections, Z sections, Round pipes, Mild steel rods/shafting
-Most I beams

3. 12m sections
Most steel reinforcement come in 12 m lengths. These range from 8mm diameter to 32 mm diameter.

4. Small rolls
Some steel meshes come in rolls for easy shipping. For example, coffee tray meshes which are about 30m long.

5.Large rolls
The most common type that comes in large rolls are the BRCs with the most common being the A142 and A98 BRC. These rolls are usually 48m long.
