Home is what you look forward to after a long day’s work. It should bring you calm and
peace to be in your space. A relaxing space will help you calm down and boost your mood when you are feeling low. A peaceful house is therapeutic. A serene atmosphere for you to recharge. The search for peaceful spaces is not new. The chinese tradition of feng shui is one of the oldest traditions that take into account the balance of a room in order to make it peaceful for the occupants.

The benefits of a peaceful and tranquil house include;
1. Increased ease to fall asleep
2. Positive energy boosts
3. Better focus and less distraction
4. Relaxed mind, body and soul
5. Creative inspiration

This exercise does not have to be expensive. Some of the ways you can make your space more peaceful is by:

1. Decluttering
When one enters a cluttered room, the eyes are forced to process the busy environment and this stresses out the mind. Always keep your house free from clutter to make the rooms calm.
Hidden storage is always a good option to make your space look less busy.

As a side note, always pick up after yourself and train the rest of the occupants of the house to clean up after themselves. This is especially easy if there are assigned places where everything goes. This will go a long way in keeping the house free from clutter. It also makes the house much easier to clean.

2. Add some colour to your walls
Wall decor using colour is one of the easier ways that you can curate your space to make it peaceful for you. This area of decor is heavily influenced by personal taste. The idea behind colours is to create a mood for your room.

Think through the purpose for the room when you want to use colour for wall decor. For areas like the bedroom and the bathroom, the colours should be relaxing and therefore one
chooses from the neutral tones and restful hues. The colour for the kitchen can be bright and lively. Another way to go is to use neutral tones but break this up with splashes of brighter paints.

3. Art and inspiring pieces
What better way to brighten your mood than using unique pieces that communicate to you? This can be in the form of art, portraits, photographs and even tapestries for wall decor. You can also use sculptures, carvings and craft pieces. Always go for pieces that you really like and will not get fed up with quickly.

Framed pictures of your family can also be a mood booster for some people and can be used in place of expensive art. One of the easier ways to decorate with art is to choose a designated wall to place it on order to allow a balance in your house. Always make sure art is put up straight .

4. Introduce Greenery and some flowers
Another easy way to add colour to your house is using plants. Nature tends to have a calming effect on the body . You do not need to bring the entire jungle inside. A simple touch of green goes a long way. You can add indoor succulents on your working table. They are small, cheap and easy to maintain.

Another way to increase the green in your home is to have herbs and spices for your kitchen. When potted, these do not take up a lot of space and you have the added advantage of fresh, readily available herbs.

If you have enough space to have a bigger plant inside, go for easy to maintain plants and ensure that the plants are placed where they can receive adequate sunlight.

5. Scent matters
We subconsciously rely on our sense of smell to make many decisions. A nice smell can boost your mood after a long day. A natural way to have a nice smelling house is through the use of flowers. Do you have a flower smell you like? Why not place a vase in your living room? The burst of colour from the flowers is a bonus.

Another way is to utilise air fresheners that imitate the natural scents. You can also invest in sweet smelling indoor plants.

6. Fabric choices
Natural fabrics also tend to have a calming effect on the body. Go for textures that are smooth to the touch to make your seats comfortable. You should also invest in comfortable bed linens for a better snooze.

When choosing patterns opt for solid or subtle patterns if you are not very well versed in interior decor.Bold patterns can create a busy effect unintentionally leading to a tense environment.
They should be used carefully. If you are not sure on how to use a pattern you like, feel free to consult a professional in this area.

7. Ensure optimum furniture arrangement
This ensures that the human traffic flow is unhindered. Small things such as the location of the seats with regards to the television, how far you need to go to find a shoe rack or hang a coat after a long day, the placement of the kitchen items can throw people off and hinder the human flow and make a place uncomfortable.
